Just this October, former US president Bill Clinton spoke at the Swell Conference, a blockchain gathering hosted by blockchain financial system Ripple.
Today, Blockchain platform TRON confirmed that basketball legend, Kobe Bryant, will speak at their upcoming summit, niTROn.
Bryant spent a storied twenty-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is a five-time NBA champion, a one-time most valuable player awardee, two-time scoring champion, and eighteen-time All-Star. He also has two Olympic gold medals with the US Men’s Basketball team.
Bryant is known as one of basketball’s fiercest competitors, characterized by his hyper-competitive nature.
Even prior to his retirement in 2016, Bryant has shown keen interest in business. He has been actively pursuing various business efforts through his venture capital firm Bryant Stibel – a fund he formed with partner, entrepreneur Jeff Stibel.
The firm has investments in various technology companies including sports website The Players Tribune, sales platform RingDNA, and mobile game publisher Scopely. Bryant also has dealings with Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba.
He also has been actively working on various creative projects. He has a series on ESPN+ called “Detail” where provides deep analyses of basketball plays. He even won an Academy Award for his animated short, “Dear Basketball.”
The summit also looks to reach out to non-blockchain industries and promote the use of the technology in various markets.
Naturally, Bryant isn’t the first athlete-turned-entrepreneur one may think of when it comes to the crypto space. There has been no previous indication of his foray into blockchain, so it would be interesting to see if he would divulge his position concerning blockchain and crypto activities during the speech.
TRON founder Justin Sun has this to say about Bryant’s attendance, “Kobe Bryant is a basketball genius. I have been a huge fan of Kobe and deeply inspired by his journey. It’s my great honor to have Kobe as our special guest for the niTRON Summit. It’s worth mentioning that Kobe Bryant is not only a basketball genius, but also an investment genius. We look forward to hearing his great speeches at the summit.”
The summit comes at an interesting time for blockchain and crypto. The cryptocurrency market has been going through a bearish period for a good part of the year.
Many coins reached their all-time highs in January but a massive drop and subsequent bear run saw coin prices fall, with some of the top coins losing more than 70 percent of their peak values.
As interest in speculation and trading wanes, more attention is now being directed to the concrete and practical applications of the technology.
TRON’s founder will share his key insights and future plans during the event, and part of the summit will be dedicated to a forum of developers. Here, thought leaders will discuss technical topics concerning public chain research and development, decentralized application (dApp) and smart contract development, decentralized exchange construction and others.
The summit will also include exhibition areas, where various applications and TRON use cases will be on display. Attendees can also network and share their insights regarding the industry and the technology with peers and industry stakeholders.
The event’s timing and attractions could inject new excitement over what’s possible with blockchain today. The involvement of personalities like Kobe Bryant as a speaker will surely generate positive buzz for the space.
While he has many fans, we wouldn’t want to see a scenario where more people are attracted to this industry solely for its hype and trends. Only time will tell if such famous off-topic speakers are treating the industry good, or not contributing at all.
